That's the worst part. Because he knows that part of him knew what she was thinking, what could very easily have happened, and he never thought he was going to be that person who did things even with that little voice chirping in the back of his head.
What, can you read my mind or something -- that is the exact picture I had in my head. Jon is surprised but still it's been so long since he's even been kissed on the cheek that at the moment the flash goes off he's got a huge dumb grin on his face.
I guess it'd start off like -- S: Who is she? (left on top of the photo) J: Lisa from class S: (just takes the note and writes ? on it)
Then Jon gives some half-assed explanation and runs out of room so he has to start over a few times. Stephen says he doesn't want her in his apartment anymore, Jon says it's his place too, Stephen says you don't even know her and Jon says neither do you. Idk maybe that doesn't get mean enough. It's a few days before Stephen leaves the "do you still love me" note, and Jon notices that it's in all lowercase and either he doesn't respond or says something that's not really an answer.
That is the best possible way to end it. When Stephen walks in he's speechless for a minute and then he just starts laughing so hard he cries, and then he tries to leave another note but there aren't any more Post-Its so he tears a blank sheet out of a textbook, tapes it up somewhere and writes like, "Did you deliberately leave me without any Post-Its to answer? (Also, okay)" and Jon scribbles underneath "Hells yes"
The landline they can probably do without. Bus fare isn't too bad because it's not that far of a walk to the grocery store or the nearest campus-bus-stop. Other times they can just hitch rides. But a month without heat and Stephen lands himself in the hospital, and that's when Lulu shows up...
Stephen grew up with them and he still misses being a part of that, being able to have with them what they have with each other. So it's hard to let go of that.
His dad hits him again and the family leaves without him (as punishment) and while they're gone he stuffs everything he can into his car and just goes.
Probably. While his dad is like "good riddance" when she's home alone (so many of the other kids have moved out, it was just her and Stephen so often) she probably like, sits in his empty room sometimes. But she can't bring herself to just go to Jon's mom and be like "Where are they." (Not for a long while, anyway.)
"WE NEED TO EAT BEFORE WE GO TO BOSTON," "JON REALLY I DON'T WANT A BAGEL," AND JON'S LIKE "YOU HAVE TO EAT SOMETHING" AND IN THE MIDDLE OF WRITING THE NOTE HE STARTS TO FEEL REALLY GUILTY ABOUT NOT LETTING HIS MOM KNOW RIGHT THEN but then he notices Stephen's got a bruise and he's just like "...MOM ILU BUT WE HAVE TO DO THIS WE'LL CALL"
